Woes of A Monday Morning Dieter

I have been struggling on this blasted diet now for 5 weeks and I have lost a measly 10 pounds! What happened to the 25 pounds a month I dreamed of - do you think that's an unrealistic expectation? For the first two weeks I was the best kind of girl and stayed strictly on the Atkins plan - which I might add, I despised. However, I did enjoy the 14 pounds I lost in those two weeks! I had tolerated all I could of excessive protein so I decided to try a modified low carb diet the third week. As soon as a single gram of carbohydrates touched my lips I gained back 4 pounds. I am still fighting to lose more weight - and I fear I am losing the battle! Why does this have to be so hard? I wouldn't dare ask my doctor about it again because I have already heard the "Well, you know at your age..." talk. I'm 56, not 100! No, I can't risk that talk again - my carb starved state is far too fragile at the moment. Doc might end up with a knuckle sandwich! Fat is enough to worry about three months before my sons wedding without the age reminder. Honest, I have been GOOD and I am simply stuck on this 10 pound plateau. We had dinner out Friday evening at Olive Garden and I had NO pasta - at OLIVE GARDEN! We had a wonderful home cooked meal with some family and friends Saturday night and I let the delicious looking rolls go right by me! I walk on the dreaded treadmill every single evening! Oh well, today begins a brand new week and I am trying to keep high hopes for a miraculous loss of a few pounds this week and move beyond the barrier! I have a busy summer that requires at least some level of skinny! - A trip to Florida with my sister-in-law in April, our sons wedding in June, and a trip to Florida in June with my hubby. Oh my goodness, I'll never eat a piece of bread again...

Girl, I understand!!! This thyroid mess has me all thrown off. It's Spring Break this week, so I'm not being too careful, but next week, I'll be singing the Low Carb blues with you! Hang in there!

I won't even go there...all the stupid treatments I have had, you would think they could sneak in a tummy tuck or diet concocktion somewhere!! I feel your pain!

Wow!! I feel your pain, because I am there, too!! HOWEVER, 10 pounds is a great start!! Look at a ten pound bag of potatoes...that's what you lost!!
I've gained back 6 of 13 I'd lost!!

We just have to keep at it...we only fail if we stop!! My goal is 40 by July. We can do this!!

Have a blessed week and keep up the good work!!
HUGS,
Becky

Hang touch, kiddo. I tried Atkins for about a month and lost 10 pounds AND my good humor. Did a search on the web and found out that there is a syndrome called "Atkins Rage" that some folks are more apt to get. There are those of us who can't handle being deprived of carbs. I was going slowly coo-coo and on the brink of hitting my mailman if he was even three minutes late with my mail, hehehe.

Anyway, I found this place called SparkPeople.com (everything there is FREE) that has great support, diet plans, calorie counters, you name it they have it. I have lost about 46 pounds and need to lose a few more but working the plan they have was the best thing for me. It's all in the calories and calories only count when you put them in your mouth. It can be a slice of bread or a Hershey bar or a bowl of cereal.

You CAN DO THIS, I did and I have a couple of years on you.

Hang in there! I know it's tough, but hey! Don't discount the fact that you've lost those 10lbs!!! 10lbs is FANTASTIC!!! How about if you shake up your physical routine a bit and throw in some hand weights. Maybe you just need to get a little kick start.
YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Hi Kathy,
I know just how you feel. This menopause thingy sure makes it harder to lose weight, it is so very frustrating. Cindy

You know, maybe avoiding carbs isn't working for you...it doesn't for me. My Dad is a borderline diabetic according to Healthpartners - they have a higher standard for diabetes - beside the point - it depends on your glycemic index if avoiding carbs will work for you. We all tested ourselves with my Dad's test strips one day for fun and my Mom & I were low/normal and my Dad was normal towards the high and Jacob was the same. We all went on the South Beach Diet and the guys lost weight, we didn't budge but a few pounds. However, when they started eating "normal" again they both instantly gained it back. Hang in there! I send you willpower! ~ Robyn

These cartoons cracked me up! They were too cute! Wishing you well on your diet. Don't stress, I hear tell that can counteract and make you gain weight while trying to diet! Good luck! 10 pounds is a great start!

...and Happy St. Pat's Day to you!
~hugs, Rhonda :)

Trying to lost 25 lb in a month is a very steep and maybe unhealthy goal. I think what works best is a healthy diet (like WW) and consistent (and varied as Rechelle said) exercising. I do feel your pain---I quit smoking 20 some years ago and have never seen the scale at the same spot it was on the day I stopped. Being at our age (and I'm 5 yrs older than you) doesn't make losing the weight any easier. I finally realized that I had to quit calling it a diet and just eat correctly (balanced diet) and exercise. When I skip one of those components--the fat returns! I also have noticed that since I started blogging, I'm spending too much time sitting in front of the computer and not moving like I used to. But, darn it, I love this blogland now! :)

Anyway, I think you're cute as a button just the way you are!
